I have to ask . . . [Jul. 4th, 2015|12:23 am]

Why are flying cars the gold standard of futurism? Blade Runner was a dystopia, for crying out loud!

I've seen car accidents happen in front me. Having them happen over my head doesn't sound nice.

(Comments I made during one of gen's livestreams in reference to her latest comic.

I was reminded of them, and inspired to post them as a journal post, when I heard it's the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future.)

39 trips around the sun.

I used some vacation time to give myself a 5 day weekend. So far, most of it's been sleeping.

wtf . . . really? [Apr. 18th, 2015|10:17 pm]

We've got a homeless person in our house.

One minor upside, it's not because Mom suddenly went senile.

Mom was put up to it by the rest of the Vietnamese community at the store she hangs out at.

Apparently they were all "SADFAEC She needs a place to stay, she doesn't have hotel money! SADFAEC"

The first thing she does when she gets here is take a shower. Without tucking the shower curtain into the tub. And tried to cover it up by trying to soak up the water with the towels.

Mom swears she "never takes trouble home" and this is two nights tops. This is night #2.

Personally, if all those people tried the same thing with me, I would have asked "If you think this is such a good idea, how come *you* aren't doing it?"

Video card go boom [Apr. 10th, 2015|08:24 am]

[Current Mood |accomplished]

Wednesday evening when I was in the middle of playing a game, my computer made a really bad noise and and shut off.

When I tried restarting it, it made all the same beeps it always makes, the keyboard made all the same flashes, but nothing on the monitor. Best case scenario, it's just the video card. Worst case scenario, I'm building my next computer a bit earlier than I'd planned.

One good thing about a 5am shift: everything is still open when you get off work. So after coming home just to drop off my bag and badge, I take a quick bus ride down to SWS. Spent way more time in front of the display case than was probably necessary. Do I get a cheap POS just to get back online, or do I go high-end and have a card worthy of being re-installed into my next rig? What if the slot is what's messed up? Getting a new card won't help. Zotac? Who the hell are they?

I eventually decided to go middle-of-the-road with a EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti for a little over $170 after tax. Almost 2/3 of the selection of PCI-E 2.0 nVidia cards was higher up than my ECS GTS 450 anyway and I've had nice experiences with EVGA. And it doesn't need the supplemental 6-pin!

Bus ride home, dinner, and on to surgery. Actually it was just yanking the old card out, popping the new one in and then "Yay! I don't have to go back to websurfing at the library again!"

And now, instead of worrying about the possibility of doing my next drain-the-bank-account, max-out-the-credit-card dream machine build before Windows 10 comes out, now I'm second-guessing whipping out the credit card. What if the old card is just fine and all I had to do was blow out the dust? Or just power-cycle the monitor? Sigh.

In anticipation of having to wake up earlier, I stayed in yesterday and got all my usual day-before-another-work-week stuff done earlier. (Laundry, etc)

Guess who ended up late to work anyway because he forgot to set the stupid alarm.

3-day weekend [Feb. 8th, 2015|09:56 pm]

[Current Mood |tiredtired]

At work, we *finally* get access to a system we should have been using since the start of the resolution team lead project. The training for it is being conducted by corporate, and I had the misfortune of one of the two days for it being on a Friday, one of my days off. Because I have to come in on a day I usually have off, I was given this Sunday off to make up for it. A 3-day weekend isn't all that great, because after training it's one day off then back to work. At least that week will have 8 hours overtime, given how the pay period works. And I'm not coming in at night, like some of the others.

Stuff that's happened since last post:

Mom got invited to a Superbowl party, and she decided to test-drive a recipe for "Vietnamese" hot-wings on us.

They were AWESOME.

Did the same thing to some beef ribs and those were awesome, too.

She also tried to replicate a recipe for sesame seed candy. We had them on our trip to Vietnam, but for some reason the local Asian market never carries them.

That didn't go so well. First batch was left on the stove too long and came out hard as a rock. Second batch went too far the other way and wouldn't hold its shape. Third batch wasn't quite the same as the real thing, but by then Mom was "Eh, close enough."

The Superbowl itself was "What's this game doing interrupting the commercials!?" I didn't have a horse in the race, to be honest. Speaking of the commercials, not as many gems as I would have liked. And that toe-fungus commercial, how'd a daytime TV commercial get onto the Superbowl?

And yet again, I've blown a day off just farting around.

. . . to get off my chest before another week of happy, fun mandatory overtime.

I don't care that it's been known as a vegetable since the Middle Ages.

I don't care how many cultures have traditional dishes containing it.

Kale is a lawn weed that somebody served as food on a dare.

There is snow outside. It snowed last night.

Not three days ago Mom was leaving the front door open to let warm air in.

(And if you haven't figured it out for yourself by now, I have the day off this year.)

last post of 2014 [Dec. 29th, 2014|09:31 pm]

[Current Mood |blahblah]

Or more likely, the last post I'll remember to make in 2014.

Did the usual use vacation time to give myself and extra long weekend, and spent it mostly sleeping and playing games.

Christmas haul: $220 in checks and cash, 2 lottery tickets, and Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica.

Seriously considering building another computer. I've mostly emerged from most Steam sales unscathed . . . because my games drive is full and I'm too lazy to migrate all that crap to another drive. And I'm getting a cpu fan error message every time I boot up. My current system isn't a "bragging rights" or "dream machine", it was a "get back online ASAP" slap-together from back when I was between jobs. Furthermore, says the best I can do with my current mobo is quad-core, so "side-grading" isn't going to do me a whole lot of good.

I've made the heavy decision that my next "performance" build will be Intel and not AMD. As much as I like to support and root for the little guy, AMD has abandoned the performance race. This has created another quandary. The current top Intel product, the Core i7-5960X, is fracking expensive. You can *literally* buy a full quad-core system for less. Not to mention Microsoft is rolling out Win10 fairly soon. ("Win10? What happened to Win9?" you're probably saying. Marketing, according to MaximumPC. MS doesn't want one odd "9" sticking out in a product line-up that's full of ones. Personally, I think they're hoping that if they skip 9 and go straight to 10 us desktop users will forget what a desktop-hating turd Win8 was a little quicker.)

But I have to face facts: as much as I like to call myself a computer geek, I'm really not. I'm not constantly tweaking settings and switching out parts like a proper geek. I slap my parts together, tweaking and replacing just enough to get it working, and then sit on it until it's so old nothing new will run on it. Which makes my principle excuse for picking inferior performing AMD over superior performing Intel "I can change out the CPU later" fall flat.

And I have to get to freaking bed now because it's back to work tomorrow.

first weekend in about 2.5 years . . . [Dec. 14th, 2014|09:33 pm]
Carl H Howard
[Current Mood |giddygiddy]

. . . was *awesome!*

Took maybe 20 calls total *dual gated*. It was 20min to over an hour between calls. Some other guy was going on about how boring it was. Not me. I was too busy spinning in my chair going "o/` I'm being paid to do nothing! I'm being paid to do nothing! I'm being paid to do nothing! o/`"

Minor downside: extra long wait for the bus because of how infrequently the bus runs on Sunday.

Major downside: because I slip my shoes on and off without lacing up, I've apparently bent an internal "cup" of hard plastic in my left shoe and it rubs on my achilles. For walking to and from the bus stop, a minor annoyance. For the hour and fifteen minute walk in to work, a big freaking deal. I hate replacing stuff that isn't really worn out.
